Over 20 lakh candidates register for SSC CGL every year, yet thousands get disqualified — not because they failed the exam, but because they applied without fully understanding the SSC CGL eligibility criteria. A wrong post preference, a missed physical standard, or an overlooked age calculation can erase months of preparation. This guide covers every condition in the official 2026 notification so you apply with complete confidence.
What Is the Educational Qualification for SSC CGL 2026?
A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a UGC-recognised university is the baseline qualification for SSC CGL 2026. A few posts require specific subjects — Statistics for JSO, and Commerce/Economics for AAO. Final-year students may apply provisionally.
For the large majority of posts — Tax Assistant, Auditor, UDC, ASO, Inspector IT, AEO — any graduate degree qualifies. The exceptions are worth noting carefully:
| Post | Specific Qualification Required | Subject Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) | Bachelor’s degree (any stream) | Statistics as a subject in graduation OR minimum 60% in Maths at Class 12 level |
| Assistant Audit Officer / AAO | Bachelor’s degree (any stream) | No subject condition; CA/ICWA/MBA Finance is desirable, not mandatory |
| Statistical Investigator Gr. II | Bachelor’s degree | Statistics must be a subject in all three years of graduation |
| All Other Posts | Bachelor’s degree (any discipline) | No subject restriction |
What Is the SSC CGL Age Limit 2026 — Post-Wise?
The SSC CGL age limit is not a single number. It ranges from 18–27 years for clerical posts (UDC, Tax Assistant, Auditor) to 18–30 years for most Group B posts, and up to 32 years for JSO. Age is calculated as of 1st August 2026.
Most guides print “18–32 years” and stop. That’s incomplete. Picking the wrong post because you misread the age cap is one of the most avoidable mistakes in CGL applications. Refer to this breakdown before submitting preferences:
| Age Band | Posts Covered |
|---|---|
| 18 – 27 years | Auditor, Accountant, Junior Accountant, Postal/Sorting Assistant, UDC, Senior Secretariat Assistant, Tax Assistant, Sub-Inspector (CBN) |
| 18 – 30 years | Inspector IT (CBDT), Inspector CE/Preventive/Examiner (CBIC), Inspector Posts, ASO (IB, MEA, Railways, AFHQ, MeitY), Assistant Enforcement Officer (DEA), Sub-Inspector NIA, Divisional Accountant, Statistical Investigator Gr-II, Research Assistant |
| 20 – 30 years | ASO (CSS), Sub-Inspector CBI |
| Up to 32 years | Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) |
SSC CGL Age Relaxation 2026 — Category-Wise
| Category | Age Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | +5 years |
| OBC | +3 years |
| PwD (General) | +10 years |
| PwD + OBC | +13 years |
| PwD + SC/ST | +15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (General) | +3 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (Group B posts — with 5+ yrs service) | +5 years |
| J&K domicile (1 Jan 1980 – 31 Dec 1989) | +5 years |
| Central Govt. Civilian Employees (Group C — under 3 yrs service) | Up to 40 years (45 for SC/ST) |
| Widows / Divorced women (unremarried) | Up to 35 years (40 for SC/ST) |
Age Calculation Date
For SSC CGL 2026, age is calculated as on 1st August 2026 — not the notification date. Always compute your age from this date before deciding post eligibility.
What Are the Nationality Conditions for SSC CGL?
Indian citizenship is the primary requirement. However, SSC also permits the following candidates to apply — subject to producing a valid Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India at the Document Verification stage:
- Citizens of India
- Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan
- Tibetan refugees who arrived in India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling here
- Persons of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire), or Vietnam — with permanent settlement intent
If you fall under categories (b)–(d) above, you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the Government of India before Document Verification. Appearing for the exam is allowed, but appointment is contingent on this certificate being produced in time.
Which SSC CGL Posts Have Physical Standards — and What Exactly Is Required?
Physical standards apply to only 8 posts out of 36+ in SSC CGL — primarily Inspector and Sub-Inspector roles. All desk-based posts (Tax Assistant, Auditor, ASO, UDC, etc.) have no physical requirements. Failing a physical test after post allocation results in cancellation of the entire candidature, with no alternate post offered.
This is the section every competitor article treats as a footnote. It shouldn’t be. If you’re targeting an Inspector or Sub-Inspector post, these standards are a hard filter — and failing them at the final stage forfeits your entire selection.
| Post | Male Height | Female Height | Male Chest | Vision (Both) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inspector CE / Preventive / Examiner (CBIC) & Sub-Inspector CBN | 157.5 cm +5cm for Gorkhas, Garwalis, Assamese, STs | 152 cm +2.5cm relaxable | 81 cm fully expanded (min. 5 cm expansion) | Distant: 6/6 & 6/9 | Near: 0.6 & 0.8 (Snellen) Glasses permitted |
| Sub-Inspector — CBI | 165 cm | 150 cm | 76 cm with expansion | Same as above |
| Sub-Inspector — NIA | 170 cm +5cm for Hillsmen/Tribals | 150 cm | 76 cm with expansion | Same as above |
Physical Efficiency Tests (PET) — What You’ll Actually Be Tested On
| Test | Male Standard | Female Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | 1600 m in 15 minutes | 1 km in 20 minutes |
| Cycling | 8 km in 30 minutes | 3 km in 25 minutes |
Candidates with color blindness are not eligible for any Inspector post under CBIC (GST, Preventive Officer, Examiner) or CBDT (Income Tax), and Sub-Inspector roles. This is one of the most common reasons for final-stage rejections. If you are color-blind, these 8 posts must be avoided entirely.
Orthopedically disabled candidates are exempted from the walking test (OL and OAL categories) and cycling test (OA, OL, and OAL categories). However, the height, chest, and weight standards still apply as prescribed.
SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria — Self-Check Before You Apply
Use this checklist to verify your eligibility before the April 2026 deadline. Each point maps directly to a disqualification risk:
- I have a bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised university (or I’m in my final year and will produce it at DV).
- If applying for JSO: I have Statistics as a graduation subject OR 60%+ in Maths at Class 12.
- I have calculated my age as on 1st August 2026 and it falls within the limit for each post I’m selecting.
- I am an Indian citizen (or hold a valid GoI Certificate of Eligibility if applicable).
- If targeting Inspector/Sub-Inspector posts: I have verified my height, chest measurement, and eyesight against post-specific standards.
- If I am color-blind: I have excluded all Inspector (CBIC/CBDT) and Sub-Inspector posts from my preference form.
- My name in the application exactly matches my Class 10 certificate.
- My OTR on ssc.gov.in is complete and active before I submit the application form.
